AN ANALYSIS OF TEACHER'S STRATEGIES TO IMPROVE STUDENTS READING SKILL AT SMA NEGERI 8 BANDA ACEH
Abstract
This study tries to analyze teacher's strategies in teaching reading skills. Strategy is a plan or method used by teachers in teaching. The research problem of this research is, what are the strategy used by English teachers in teaching reading skills in the second grade of senior high school 8 Banda Aceh and how the teacher applies the strategy in teaching reading skills. This research used qualitative research methods. The subjects of this study were English teachers in grade 2 MIPA 3 and 2 MIPA 5 in senior high school 8 Banda Aceh. This study used observation and interviews as the research instruments. To analyze the data, the researcher summarized the information about teacher's strategy in teaching reading skill from the result of interview with teacher, and describe what teachers do when teaching reading through observation. The results revealed that the teachers used several strategies in teaching reading skills. The strategies used by the teachers in grade 2 MIPA 3 and 2 MIPA 5 are: (1) Analyzing vocabulary, (2) How to pronounce, and (3) Translation. Whereas the teachers in grade 2 MIPA 5 used the following strategies: (1) Questions and Answer (2) Analyzing vocabulary, and (3) Discussion. Based on the results of observation and interviews, the teachers were able to apply several strategies using different techniques. The teachers used those strategies so that the students more easily understand reading skill, and those strategies helped the teachers to guide the students to be more focus on the text.
