AN ANALYSIS OF ADJUDICATORS' FEEDBACK STRATEGY IN COMPETITIVE DEBATE
Abstract
This study is aimed to analyze the adjudicators' Feedback strategy in Competitive Debate. It was conducted to know what the strategies of adjudicator while giving feedback are. The method used in this study was qualitative research. The research design of the study was content analysis. The primary data were data analysis from recorded adjudicator feedback in competitive debate at NUDC 2020. The technique used in collecting the data was Seven-Step Model by Onwuegbuzie and Frels, there are; (1) Exploring the topics, (2) Initiating the Search, (3) Storing and Organizing Information, (4) Selecting/Deselecting Information, (5) Expanding the Search, (6) Analyze the information, and (7) Present the Report. The result revealed that all adjudicators used opening statement, decision, and reasoning but the first and third adjudicators have introduction when giving feedback. The way of the first adjudicator while giving feedback started from the fourth rank then compare to third, second, and first rank, while the fifth adjudicator started to compare with the first, second and third rank. When adjudicators want to give feedback for the third rank, all of them compare to second and first, second to first. Lastly they glorify the idea of first rank. After that, the third and fourth adjudicators compare between opponent debate which is the second and first to the third and fourth rank before comparing the fourth rank to other position. Finally all of adjudicator give closing and asked to approach them at discord if they still hard to understand their feedback.
