Abstract

This is an experimental research conducted at the first grade students of SMPN 19 Banda Aceh. The writer limited the discussion by stated the following problem: does content-based instruction can improve students' speaking ability? The aim of the study was to know the students' speaking ability by applying content-based instruction. The population of this study was the first grade students of junior high school 19 Banda Aceh in academic year 2018/2019. In this study the class of VII1 was chosen as the experimental group based on the early observation conducted by the writer. The data needed are gotten by distributing speaking test to the students. The data was analyzed by using t-test. The result of the study showed that the t-score was 16.25 the critical value of the t-score for degree of freedom of samples was 2.07 at the level of significance 0.05%. Since the calculation of the score 16.25 was greater than T-table 2.07. Thus, the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. It means that applying content-based instruction in improving students' speaking ability at the first grade of junior high school 19 Banda Aceh was better and got best score than that before. Based on the result of the study, the teacher should applied content-based instruction in teaching speaking because it could improve the students' speaking ability.
