Abstract

This study aims to investigate whether Direct Instruction Strategy can improve reading skills and to determine students' perception about the use of Direct Instruction Strategy in learning reading. The method used in this study was experimental quantitative. The result showed that Direct Instruction Strategy were effective in reading techniques. This is proved by the increasing of students' learning outcomes. The mean score of post-test is higher than the pre-test (77,16>63,33). Based on the t-test analysis, the t-test score (11,15) was higher than critical score at the 0,05 significant level 2.01505, which proved that the alternative hypothesis of this study is accepted and the null hypothesis is rejected. It showes that the direct instruction strategy are effectively applied in reading learning. Based on the result of the questionnaire analysis showed a positive response. The majority of students (81, 81%) said that their reading ability improved after using Direct Instruction Strategies.
